Java Plugin for Firefox2 on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

May 11th 2008

My upgrade of Ubuntu from Feisty to Hardy went fairly smoothly, but of course, you don’t know what doesn’t work until you try something that doesn’t…

Today, it was the java plugin for Firefox2. I tried the Firefox3 beta that installed with the Hardy upgrade. Long story short – it’s still beta quality, and shouldn’t have been included by default in an LTS distro upgrade.

I found the fix for this on the Ubuntu forums, at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=782167:

symlink /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so into /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

Now the music samples on Mary’s website play again!
